First and Second Grade Homework Packet
In Ms. Zimar's first and second grade classroom, students are sent home with a homework packet on Friday afternoons. The packet is due back on or before the following Friday. This gives each child the weekend and following week to finish the assignments. Some students choose to finish the packet over the weekend, while other children may prefer to work on one page per night. In this way, children are given a choice. The packet entails a reading record sheet where students are encouraged to read at least 20 minutes a night. For second grade, a list of spelling words and a practice spelling guide follows the reading record. First graders will receive a list of word wall words to read and practice at
home. We do not have spelling quizzes in first grade. The packet also contains extra practice sheets of the math skills learned from the lessons of that week, along with a thematically based word search, crossword puzzle, or other engaging literacy activity.
Depending upon what we are studying, occasional research projects are also sent home within a homework packet. These activities may be allotted extra time. This would be clarified at the top of the assignment and in my weekly letter.
